News & Announcements / Server revival & Xmas Update
« on: December 21, 2021, 07:57:34 PM »
Revival & Christmas Event 2021

After a couple of years of downtime, the MoronYard servers are up and running again.

The most popular servers have been revived and are being hosted again (RIP BTTT & Murder). All of your profile and inventory data is available, so feel free to jump in right where you left off (all these years ago...).

To celebrate the revival of the servers, a new Christmas event has also been launched. Please find more details below.

Lastly, I encourage everyone to join our discord server, as maintenance of the forums is not a priority right now.

  • Activated Event Mode on our gameservers. 30% more cash will be given out!
  • Enabled "actual double goldbar mode". For every goldbar you purchase, you get 1 goldbar for free! (Buy 1 - get 2, buy 3 - get 6!). Note: You will not get 4 goldbars from the Diamond VIP membership. Only gold bar purchases are affected.
  • Santa is visiting us on our servers
    • Collecting gifts and killing Sanctuary mobs with melee weapons can attract the man with the red hat.
    • Completing Santa's challenges will net you winter fragments, which can be combined into Winter Supply Crates. Those can be opened with a regular key.
    • Remember, Christmas is about giving! (or trading)
    • Santa will occasionally also do good deeds!

  • Added new hats and body attachments
  • Gifts will spawn a lot more often (and require fewer people)!
  • IPD has been increased by 4 for the event!

The event will run at least until January 9th.

News & Announcements / Future of MoronYard
« on: November 01, 2017, 04:20:09 PM »
It has been over a year since the servers officially shut down, and I have received dozens of questions about the future of the community, requests to re-open the servers and offers from people who were interested in taking over / buying the community.

I wanna take the time to answer a few of these questions and give an outlook of what the future might hold for MY.

Why did the servers have to shut down?

A few reasons:

  • Donations were dipping to a point where I had to pay for almost 80% of the server costs out of my own pocket in the months prior to the shutdown.
  • Lack of motivation to develop new features and provide new content on my end saw the number of updates and events fall to an all-time low.

How much were the server costs?

At the peak of activity in the community, we ran 15 servers on a single dedicated host, which maxed out resources on said machine. Here's a short breakdown of what the monthly server costs were

  • Dedicated host: 250€
  • Windows license: 15€
  • Database + Web server: 60€
  • Various licenses + software: 20€
  • Additional traffic on gameserver: 10€-20€

This leaves us at roughly 350€ / month to run all of the servers.

Why didn't you just keep a single server running?

The aforementioned sum sadly does not scale down very well to a single server. While we can run 15 servers for 350€, running server costs more than 350€ / 15 = 23.3€. In fact, this is a breakdown of what it would cost to run 1 server:

  • Dual core / 2 GB /SSD - Virtual Machine, serving 20 players: 15€
  • Database + Web server: 60€ (could potentially be scaled down to 30€)
  • Various licenses + software: 20€

The components which are essential and can cover up to 15-20 servers (DB) will likely stay the same, which brings the cost of a single server to around 65€- 80€. From there, adding another server only costs 15€, and it scales upwards.

What does this mean for MoronYard?

Donations for Garry's Mod communities are usually a hard thing to come by, and we have been very blessed to have such a loyal and generous core of active players in our community, which kept the community up and running for many years.

In order to commemorate our Halloween Event tradition, I have decided to start up a Virtual Machine running an instance of Smash. The server will remain online for at least this week.

You can find the server at the following IP:

66.150.121.31:27015

I am currently evaluating if we can get the community going again. In order for that to happen, we need to have active players, donations and motivation on my end.

Please let me know in here, or in the steam group if you want the community to come back or if you are willing to support us.

Thanks, and happy Halloween everyone!

Halloween Event 2015

That's right, the MoronYard Halloween event is back for this year. After the 2014 edition sadly had to be cancelled, we are back with our classic event where you can earn unique legendary items and more!

  • Complete Merasmus' challenges and earn rotten, cursed and damned souls! Souls can be crafted into legendary items or Spooky Crates, which have a chance of containing silver and golden items as well!
  • Open a Halloween Cauldron to receive an item from previous Halloween events! The contained items are non-legendary in order to not devalue any existing items.
  • New spooky Halloween particle effects have been added!
  • Bundles of Damned Souls, Halloween Cauldrons and Spooky Crates are also available for purchase in the Premium shop!

Summon Merasmus by collecting gifts and participate in challenges to receive souls! For more information, read this wiki article!

Merasmus cannot currently appear on the Lobby server; this will be possible tomorrow.

Enjoy!

Upcoming development

With the release of the new relic chests today, we are finally ready to announce new stretch goals for the month of September. In case the set stretch goals for this month are not met by the end of September, any remaining stretch goals will return the following month.

As of today, development for Sanctuary has also officially resumed. A lot of glitches and bugs have accumulated over the past months and will be dealt with as soon as possible. This is a reminder for all active players to report bugs on our forums, so they can be reproduced and fixed more easily.

We are also proud to present a new item-tooltip for our server inventory, which should make it easier to summarize an item's properties, as well as being accessible to new users.

The website / explorer tooltips will be adjusted to match the new in-game design over the course of the next few days.

We hope you enjoy your stay on our servers and please make sure to post any suggestions or bug reports on our forums!

News & Announcements / Update on current stretch goals

Stretch goal update

We are currently working on finalizing the new collector effects for the 160% stretch goal. We are looking at more than 15 new effects, which do not exist on the servers yet (not necessarily double effects). We will be trying to release the effects this weekend.

Unfortunately, the release of the new relic chest will be delayed a short while. I was initially considering changing the goal to a more generic chest of goodies, but decided against it, since it was not what the community worked towards. Please bear with us while we try to get the new relic chest to you as soon as possible.

As for the strange items: most of these items have been implemented and test and should be released without any major delay.

Thanks for the support and your generous contributions!

News & Announcements / Dodgeball Tournament

Dodgeball Tournament

The dodgeball tournament will start on Sunday August 9th at 18:00 CEST.

Tournament format
  • Teams of 4 players
  • Single elimination bracket - 2 teams play each other, winner advances, loser is out
  • Maximum of 8 teams
  • First team to win 10 rounds wins

We will (depending on the number of teams) play matches on 2 servers simultaneously.

What is dodgeball?
Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tr7z9U0L7ao (or the original tf2 version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUZOGnxuXeI)
Deflect incoming rockets with right-click to make them fly to the enemy team. Get hit by a rocket and you lose health. If all players on a team die, they lose.

Dodgeball changes
Since the last version of dodgeball was run on our servers, some things have changed:
  • Any stats (movement speed, max hp, hp regen, resistances, etc...) from items are disabled.
  • Stats on dodgeball weapons (blasters) are also disabled
  • Only the default blaster will be available during the tournament

Prizes
Will be announced later

How do I sign up?
Post in this thread. 1 post per team. I need the following info:
  • Team name:
  • Players: (Name & SteamID)

Deadline for the signup is Tuesday August 4th 18:00 CEST. The bracket will be announced shortly afterwards.

When can we test dodgeball?
I am aiming for a release roughly around the time the signup deadline ends.

EDIT: Reduced number of rounds needed to win to 10!

Tournament Vote

With the community gem vote coming to an end, it is now time to vote on the type of tournament that should be held.
Each player gets a maximum of 2 votes to cast.

Incase of a dodgeball tournament, the tournament format will need to be discussed by staff (maybe 2v2 teams with a bracket, vanilla weapons only).

Community gem voting

It's time for the community to decide on the attribute that should be used for the community-designed gem. We will be going with an unused attribute that cannot yet be found on any of the existing gems.

Each player gets to cast 2 votes to decide which attribute the gem should receive.

The poll runs for a total of 3 days, after which the gem will be added to the game. You can also leave (serious) name suggestions for the gem in this thread.

Monthly Stretch Goals

The new stretch goals for the month of July have been announced.

As for the remaining 2 stretch goals for the month of June, I aiming to have them ready by the end of next week. There are some more things I need to balance before I feel comfortable releasing them on the servers.

The chat tag bundle for June will be removed from the premium shop later today; existing chat tag bundles in player inventories or the bank will however not be removed.

Enjoy!

Tomorrow, the item lottery winners will be drawn. An overview of items that can be won is available here:

http://moronyard.com/explorer/users/public_inv/LOTTERY

Further information:
  • 1 item per drawn user (relic chests come with keys)
  • users can be drawn multiple time (if lucky)
  • multiple tickets do not increase your odds of winning
  • to participate you need to have a lottery ticket from the hourglass shop in your inventory (not bank, not inventory queue) and need to have played during the month of june
  • the winners will be announced here and through the steam group announcement feature
  • won items will be played into the inventory queue

Good luck!

Stretch goals reached!

All of our stretch goals for the month of june have been unlocked by our amazing (and generous) community members; a big thanks to all those who donated!

Most of the stretch goal rewards have already been released to the players, but others need a bit more work before they can be implemented into the game.

The premium chest rework as well as the collector's items are 2 features that I am still working on to make sure they are well-balanced and ready for the servers. Don't worry, as soon as the rewards are ready there will be another announcement so you can claim them on the servers.

As for the lottery; this event will be held on Sunday 28th of June 2015. In order to be eligible for any of the items that are being given away, you need to purchase a lottery ticket in the token shop and keep it in your inventory (not bank / inventory queue). Only players who joined our server during this month will be eligible. The lottery items that are being given out will be announced tomorrow. Also, you do not need to be on the servers when the winners are drawn; simply having the lottery ticket in your inventory is enough.

Enjoy your stay on the servers!
