I'd like to suggest adding a jukebox feature used to play music on the servers. I think it would be really enjoyable to have some music playing along with the steady crash of boxes plummeting into platforms and drill mines beeping away the time left until the inevitable.

I'll give you an idea of what i'm thinking:

Let's say a user wants to play a song using the jukebox. The user hits F4 to bring up the jukebox interface containing a searchable library of songs that have been added to the server. If the user prefers, the library can also be sorted alphabetically by song title, artist, album or genre. The user is able to spend a small amount of an in game currency (not sure if cash or tokens would be more appropriate) which will purchase a song of his/her choosing to be played. Songs will be queued in order of purchase.

The jukebox interface would have several different features for individual users:

  • Add - Plays the selected song or adds it to the queue.
  • Mute song - Used to mute only the currently playing song.
  • Mute all - Used to mute all music from the jukebox.
  • Queue - Brings up a dialog box which displays a list of currently queued songs.
  • Volume - Used to adjust the jukebox volume level via a slidebar.
  • Vote Skip - Used to skip the current song. A certain number of votes (based on number of people playing) are required to skip the song. (maybe vote skips should be purchased?)
  • Request - Brings up an input box allowing players to suggest new songs to be added into the library.

Mods/Admins would have different features to pause or mute the jukebox for all players. This could be used for events or other activities where music could inhibit hearing important info that might be given via a mic.

I have seen jukebox setups similar to what I proposed on other servers and really liked the feel and social aspect it added to the game. An example of one can be found on the Evolution Servers - Minigames server 64.31.15.98:27065 (press F3 to bring up the jukebox). I also want to point out that giving Evolution Severs IP address on this forum is NOT AN ADVERTISEMENT for them. I tried to screenshot their jukebox using steam and print screen to no avail. I did want to show an example of a working jukebox though.

My proposed model is purely a mock-up and by no means would it have to be setup in this way. Please post if you are interested in something like this. Feel free to add new ideas and make any changes to my suggestions.

Yeah sounds like a good idea maybe an on screen button to either mute / unmute music or voice / music swap button so you could silence the music to talk then when your done negotiating return to the tunes : )

I did plan on doing this but rather than filling up space and bandwidth on the server with songs it would use the Grooveshark API.

I like this idea, I play on other servers that have it and I like the feature and it would be nice to have it on Smash/Slope and other upcoming servers

It can be really fun. Podcast weekends or something, have special radio stations or something. I really hope I can work on this in the future.

I think this is a great idea, rather than go on Pandora and listen to music, we will all be able to put our own input and have fun while listening. And if people do not like this idea, they can always mute the song choice that is currently playing. +1 to this idea.
I strive for something beyond the strongest, that challenging me would be the most ridiculous thought ever, that fighting me would be a sin!

Well, I must say that this seems like quite the idea! This man is worthy of song and should be praised. The only downside really is the slightly longer download for new players, but honestly it shouldn't be a major problem, eh?  (I demand Space Jam and Apache be on the perhaps future Jukebox.)

There wont be any extra downloads for new players since this would be done completely differently. Perhaps you could enter a youtube link and request it to be played, then moderators could decide from the list whether to play it or not. But I really wanna use grooveshark and make it display all songs you search for

Using Grooveshark is a good idea to save bandwidth. Would you be able to setup a way for players to buy songs to play? I think it would help new players feel like they can spend their money on something. It might also help a bit with people adding a bunch of songs at once. Would vote skips be possible?

Also, If you decide to put a mod in charge of what is being played, they will most likely be hounded with requests in chat to "play my song next" and whatnot. Just something to think about. Might be easier on the mods to just let the players on the server handle what plays next.

I would most likely have a list of songs and the ability to remove them from the list
