BTT has turned into a farming gamemode where one team afks and the other team wins with no fight...

Ah, interesting; I will take your detailed suggestions on how to improve the server into consideration and report back asap.

the main reason why this has no doubt pop up is because losing isn't fun and when you ether
a) have people who want to be with the people who win thus causing the server to die in 5 minutes when people refuse to join teams because of b
b) the people who want to stack teams and finish before the less skilled players even hit level 1-2 aka drop farm

Potentially couldn't the way the rounds and rewards are change in such a way it gives everyone time to get to the top, get some cash and potentially an item. It could be a variant of the following idea:

1st, 2nd, 3rd and (4th or last if less than 4 teams) have different loot tables they can roll from for the prize for completion. Once the first team completes a countdown happens to the end of the round. People that get up get a prize from whatever loot table they would fall under. Potentially could give people that don't make it a participation prize like a wooden fragment if anything at all.

Another option could just be making the rounds straight time attack, and prizes be based on the time it took to get to the top.

Finally it could just be a mixture of any of the above ideas but without item prizes, instead cash to avoid any issues the item prize incentive has.

Could auto assigning teams fix this issue? Its very easy to drop farm if you get a couple of determined people who are purely doing it for that purpose, and a couple of average players on the other team. If the teams where randomised it would make it a lot harder and solve the issue of people not joining teams because they are "worse".
The number of teams would vary on the amount of connected players for example:

4-6 players = 2 teams
6-9 players = 3 teams
9-12 players = 4 teams

I think that applying a random team to everyone who joins is a great idea.

Random teams would definitely fix this issue.  The best players would be put on teams with random players, so they can't all try to get on the same team.

Random teams might fix one issue, but just cause more. I feel like playing a game heavily based on teamwork just wouldn't work with random teams.

teamwork to me is not the issue with bttt currently, but random teams might work out a few issues to me.
